The acid wash hits Lagos

Ashluxe's vintage acid-wash drop sold out in seventy-two hours. What we saw on the streets at 5 a.m. in Lekki.

Vintage Wash Zip Hoodie, Ashluxe

There was a queue outside the Ashluxe store in Lekki Phase 1 at 5:14 a.m. on March 27, by my count thirty-eight people deep, the front of the line wrapped in puffer jackets despite the temperature. The drop was a Vintage Acid Wash capsule — three pieces, all in black-on-black wash patterns: a zip hoodie, a t-shirt, a pair of shorts. Prices in naira. Cash only at the door, card inside, one piece per person on the hoodie until 11 a.m.

By breakfast, the hoodie was gone.

What's actually new

Ashluxe has been making acid-wash denim for the better part of three years. The Vintage Wash capsule is something different. The wash is done in-house in Lagos, by a small team using a chlorine-and-pumice process the studio describes as "closer to laundry than fashion." Each piece comes out slightly different. Two hoodies pulled from the same dye bath read as cousins, not twins. Founder Tomiwa Olagbenro has said in interviews that the irregularity is the point.

The math of streetwear in Lagos is harder than it looks. A hoodie at 152,000 naira is about $97 USD at this morning's rate. That is not, by global streetwear standards, a luxury price. It is, by Lagos standards, a meaningful one — the median monthly income in the metro area is somewhere around 300,000 naira, depending on whose survey you trust. The fact that the drop sold out anyway is part of a longer story about who streetwear is for in Lagos right now, and the answer is: a generation that has decided that what they wear should be Made Here.

What I saw

Davido didn't show. Burna Boy did, for forty seconds, in a black baseball cap pulled low. The kid in front of me in the queue had been there since 2:30 a.m. and was wearing every piece of Ashluxe he already owned, layered. He told me the hoodie was a gift for his older brother, who lives in Ottawa now. "He wants the Lagos thing," he said. "This is the Lagos thing."

The next drop is rumored for July.
